The EIT has secured research funding from the Australian national government to help enhance remote laboratory practicals for selected students. Ultimately this will be expanded so that greater numbers of EIT students have even better access to an outstanding online experience. Gone are the days when online training meant a “book on the web”.

We aim to enrich distance training by offering access to remote bench-based equipment. Students will be able to go online to experiment with “real” equipment. This will allow them to practice skills safely and reduce the need for travel to physical workshops. In this small scale pilot project we will use cutting-edge but accessible technologies to provide remote access to actual equipment such as circuit boards, oscilloscopes and multimeters. Students will be able to book individual sessions or join a class for demonstration sessions.

Students will be several thousand kilometres from the actual equipment, but will be able to perform experiments as if they were present in the actual laboratory.

The success of this project will be used to promote advanced interactive e-learning.

Our pilot group of students will complete this activity as part of their studies towards ether the Certificate III or Diploma of Electricity Supply Industry – Power Systems. This project will improve their on-the-job skills by adding practical sessions to their online experience.
